From Iowa, Jerald and Ginger the Wonder Dog travelled 1800 miles over 4 days to northwest Washington. The plan was to get near Port Townsend WA and then pick up Claire at Sea-Tac.
During the trip, which was pretty uneventful, the biggest challenge was to find places to sleep. It’s a lot easier when there are two people checking for Walmarts (not all Walmarts will let you spend the night) or other places. So solo drivers sometimes have to take what they can get. This leg included one overnight in real dump of an RV park in Wyoming, a truck stop in Montana (free) and $100.00 stay in a KOA in Washington.
We won’t be doing that KOA thing again.
Initially in Port Townsend, we ended up in the Jefferson Country Fairgrounds RV park. This is next to the active horse lot at the fairgrounds, with full water and sewer hookups. Electric was limited to 15amp service which is a little bit better than boondocking. Fortunately we had requested reservations at a nearby Escapee park and on Monday we got word that our reservation was accepted.
We moved pretty quick.
The SKP park is a wonderful, beautiful place just outside of Port Townsend. Most of the residents are long term leaseholders which gives them a sense of ownership. This is reflected in the paths and gardens, maintained by the occupants, around the park. They were quite nice and usual had a theme. My personal favorite was “Dragon Lane”. Sometimes the theme was a bit whimsical as shown by the “Mooner” display.

Port Townsend itself was an early stopping point for ships engaged in world trade in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the buildings are from that heyday and are quite pretty giving Port Townsend are unique look. There is a vibrant art community and many of the old Victorian era homes have been preserved.
This also makes it quite pricey. Apparently it attracts a lot of money from Seattle.
We also visted a number of the state and national parks in the area. Our favorite was Fort Flagler State Park which had excellent dog walking path.
We are staying the SKP part for 2 weeks and then setting sail for Moab Utah. Our plan now is to stop in Pendleton Oregon (just to make sure they are taking good care of our town) for a couple of day along the way.
We are quite taken by the quirky wonderful place and we shall certainly return.
